Smile and Nod is a team of improvisers from the San Luis Obispo area attending university on a mission to make you laugh every Saturday night. Since our founding in 1998, we have been dedicated to the craft of improvisation, hosting workshops, putting on weekly shows, serving the community, and performing internationally.Have any more questions about the team? See our FAQs or contact us through the accounts below.

Where are the shows?
For Winter 2026, almost all of our shows will be held in The Forum, which is located between the Cal Poly campus bookstore and 1901. The Noob Show will be in Chumash Auditorium.
Where can I buy tickets?
Tickets can be purchased for $5 each at the door before each show.
I’m new to improv; do I have to go up on stage while watching a show??
No! The role of the audience member is to sit, to laugh, and to answer questions when prompted. Questions will be simple but may require creativity; for example… “What’s a bad place for a first date?” or “Name an occupation”. Your answers will be used by the improvisers to create scenes for you to watch!
How can I join the team?
Our team holds open auditions on the first Friday of every quarter. Check our Instagram for specific dates and locations, and come show us your talent!
Are workshops open to everyone?
Yes! Workshops are specifically catered to non-team individuals who want to develop their skills and have fun doing improv. Check out our GroupMe for more details!
What's the difference between “short-form” and “long-form” shows?
A short form show consists of improvisers performing short standalone scenes based on individual suggestions from the audience. Short form “games” are 3-5 minutes, and the show consists of 9 games with two teams of improvisers performing games head-to-head. A long form show is a longer improvised story, with scenes often connecting to one another to either form a cohesive plot or to build on the ideas of past scenes. This style has improvisers coming and going from scenes, different settings, and cuts to different moments in time.
